How I first discovered Singing Success
I first came across Brett Manning’s Singing Success program back in 2009.
I was catching up with a childhood friend that I’d sung with in choirs as a teenager. She had been living and working in a remote rural town in the far north of Australia for a few years.
We hadn’t seen each other for about 12 months, and when our conversation got around to music (as it always does), she lit up and got all squirmy with excitement.
“I’ve got top C,” she said, beaming.
“You’ve got what?” I decided she couldn’t mean a top C in her vocal range. She’d always had a low to middle-range voice.
“I can sing a top C. No strain. Clear as a bell.”
So of course I immediately dragged her to my music room and…sure enough. She had a gorgeous top C, and more than a few notes beyond, not to mention impeccable control of a voice that had clearly been transformed by vocal training.
I expressed my surprise that she’d managed to find a singing teacher in her remote town, and was blown away when she told me that her ‘new voice’ was due to the Singing Success vocal training program she’d been using every day for about 10 months.
My personal experience with Singing Success
That was the moment I decided I wanted to learn more about it. To date, I had not come across any online singing programs that I felt comfortable recommending to any potential singer (in fact, through my students I had discovered that a lot of programs out there were doing more harm than good when it came to developing vocalists).
So I purchased Singing Success and went through the program myself. I didn’t just watch the DVDs and listen to the CDs, I actually worked through the entire vocal training program over several months.
Yes. I did the whole thing. Even though I’d already spent over 10 years taking classical singing lessons from a renowned teacher.
And guess what? I became a much better singer.
I discovered that Brett Manning’s program taught pretty much the same principles I’d learned from my teacher (from a school often called “speech-level singing”), but the difference was, he showed me exactly how I could use the techniques to sing any genre. Any style. Not just classical, but pop, rock, musical theatre, jazz, blues, gospel…literally any vocal style.
I was so used to thinking of myself primarily as someone who sung lieder, art songs and oratorios, but didn’t have the sort of voice to seriously tackle jazz and rock (which I LOVE). After having worked through Singing Success, I found that I could turn my voice to whatever style I wanted.
That was amazingly cool. Because I’d had a teacher who was completely entrenched in the classical style, she hadn’t taught me how to use my voice across other genres, even though the technique was essentially the same. It completely surprised me that I had the ability to sing in the styles of both Cecilia Bartoli AND Alanis Morissette. Though not at the same time, obviously ;-)
By using the program, I also extended my mezzo contralto range – there are exercises that Brett uses that I’d never come across before, and they freed up top notes I didn’t know I had.
The course also made me a better music teacher. Brett is a great teacher, and listening to all those hours of experience and expertise rubs off after a while. His passion and enthusiasm for the subject of singing is genuine. It runs through all the Singing Success course materials.
About Singing Success
I thought it was important for me to give a personal account of my experience with Singing Success before going into detail about the actual program – so here’s the nuts and bolts of what Singing Success is about.
The Singing Success vocal training program includes 12 CDs, a tutorial DVD and an instructional workbook full of the vocal exercises and techniques that Brett Manning uses to train his own students [UPDATED 2016: The new Singing Success 360 program includes 16 CDs and almost 30 hours of lessons]. There is also the option to download all the training materials online if you’d prefer not to receive a hard copy of the program by post.
How it works
The course is primarily audio-based. The CDs are divided into lessons and exercises that you can listen to as many times as you want, and work through at your own pace (I put all of them on my iPod). You start with disc 1, and work your way through.
You’ll be referred to additional materials in the workbook or DVD in relevant places, where concepts need the help of a visual to explain them more fully. For example, the workbook contains photographs of the anatomy of the vocal cords, and what the body looks like when breathing correctly,
Throughout most of the course, you should master a particular lesson before moving on to the next one. Practicing at least three days a week is recommended, though more is encouraged, as long as you’re not tired.
- Increase your vocal range and power;
- Improve your vocal tone, style, pitch and control;
- It does not matter if you are a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass – low or high voice, it makes no difference. The training caters to all vocal types.
- The techniques are applicable to any vocal style/music genre (i.e. pop, rock, jazz, classical, gospel, blues, etc.);
- Ability to go over the lessons and techniques as many times as you want (practice makes perfect);
- Flexibility to learn anywhere and use the program materials at your convenience – at home, practice in your car, warm up backstage;
- Extremely cost effective compared to expense of face-to-face lessons;
- Risk-free investment as there is a six-month money back guarantee (no questions asked).
- If you do not have the self-discipline and motivation to practice regularly, then you should not consider this program as it’s self-paced training and you need to put in the work to achieve results.
Singing Success is the most rigorous and effective vocal training program that I have encountered. It is also the only one that I recommend on this site (there are many out there, but as a music teacher I’m interested only in quality programs that promote vocal health and produce great results).
Like many things in life, the key to this program is implementation.
You may purchase Singing Success, you may watch the DVD, listen to all the discs, and read the workbook, but to improve your voice you must IMPLEMENT what you learn by PRACTICING! It sounds really obvious, I know, but I don’t want to encourage anyone to buy a program like Singing Success without fully acknowledging that if you want results, vocal mastery requires motivation, practice, and persistence.
If you know that you are passionate about pursuing vocal training, and you are willing to work hard to pursue your singing dreams, then I unreservedly recommend the Singing Success program.
The fact that Brett Manning offers a six-month money back guarantee (which nobody else out there offers) is testament to the authenticity of the program, and the kind of stunning results that are possible in a relatively short period of time. If you have the time, I recommend that you check out the before and after recordings that students have posted up on the Singing Success website – they are fantastic examples of what may be achieved.
